There is no person who has not heard in his childhood these words: “eat carrots to have good vision”. But this vegetable is not the only one which protect our eyes, but all orange fruits and vegetables. They contain beta-carotene, soluble vitamin that helps the proper functioning of the retina and, therefore, improves eyesight and prevents diseases caused by aging.
But not only beta-carotene may help prevent vision problems but also other vitamins and minerals in these five foods:

1. Leafy green vegetables – are important resources of lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants which studies have shown can reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration and cataracts.
2. Egg-yolk in particular has rich sources of antioxidants and zinc, with an important role in preventing eye diseases as we age.
3. Citrus and purple fruits (blueberries, blackberries, currants, plums, etc.) – Are a great cocktail of vitamin C, which significantly decreases the chances of developing eye problems.
4. Almonds – are full of vitamin E, which slows the aging process, including that of macular degeneration. A handful of almonds a day provides about half of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin E.
5. Fatty fish – such as tuna, salmon, mackerel and anchovies, is rich in essential fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids including DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), acids which are vital to keep our health in general, and in particular to protect us. A study by U.S. scientists show that people who rarely eat fatty ocean fish often are facing with dry eye syndrome and have vision problems.
