3 Easy Tips To Save Money With Fresh And Healthy Food

Everyone has this idea that you can’t save money with healthy food, because in general food that is healthy costs more. But the trick to being healthy on a budget is in the way you manage what you eat.

You don’t have to buy expensive ingredients to get delicious and nutritious food. And you can very easily be healthy without paying your whole paycheck on food. To help you with that, check out the 3 tips below.

How To Save Money On Healthy Foods

We have gathered a few tips on how to handle your budge and your health at the same time. Here they are:

1. Preserve Fresh Herbs By Freezing Them In Oil

All you need for this is a bit of olive oil and some freezer space.

  • Wash your herbs, and pat them until they’re dry, and then chop them up.
  • You can add them separately in the ice cube tray, or mix them if you know you’re going to use a combo.
  • Then pour olive oil on tops of the herbs in the ice tray, and freeze it.

That way you will have incredibly fresh-tasting herbs all year round, and you won’t have to pay a fortune buying them fresh from the supermarket in winter.

2. Keep Berries Fresh For Longer

Save money on berries

It’s great when you finally find a sale at the farmer’s market, and berries are sold for almost nothing. What’s not so great is that you can’t usually save money and have fruit for too long at the same time. But there’s a trick to help with this.

All you need to do is wash the fruit in a mixture of vinegar and water (1 cup vinegar, 3 cups water), and then spin them dry in the salad spinner.

The vinegar destroys the bacteria and molds spores on the berries, making sure that they don’t go bad easily. And because the vinegar is so diluted, after you dry the berries you will not smell it at all.

This money saving tip is useful for strawberries, raspberries, and even blackberries.

3. Make Your Own Peanut Butter

Save money on peanut butter

Peanut butter is a staple in the homes of all those trying to eat healthy, and still get a bit of PBJ in the mix. But buying it isn’t always the most cost-effective option.

If you want to make your own, you will save money and also reduce the number of chemicals. Store-bought peanut butter usually has a lot of preservatives, but if you make it at home you only need one ingredient: peanuts!

  • Roast the raw peanuts for a few minutes in the oven until they start to smell nice and get a little brown.
  • While they are warm, add them to a food processor and buzzzzz it! You can leave it on for 2-3 minutes if you like chunky peanut butter, or for 7-10 minutes if you like the smooth kind. You don’t need a fancy food processor for this – for the low end ones you just need an extra minute or two. If your processor needs to be used for a maximum of 2-3 minutes at once, you can do this in batches, and blend it for 2 minutes, 5 times, for smooth peanut butter.

Not only will you save money, but you will also have a healthier protein-filled snack.
