5 Tips To Help You Get Over The Fitness Hump

There are some questions I think a lot of us run into when we’re trying to lose weight: When are the results gonna show? When is my hard work going to pay off? We just lose our momentum because the results aren’t happening fast enough. Today I will share with you 5 tips to get over that fitness hump.

Throughout the year there are sort of up and downs like weight loss and then gaining back and so on. I like to say I’ve learned from some of my mistakes and I know that one of my biggest flaws in my personality is that I’m not patient enough.

Most of you who want to lose weight have the same personality “issue” like me: you’re not patient enough. You want it now; You want it to happened; You work really hard for it and You wait for it to magically appear, but the results don’t show and then you’re disappointed and get back to your unhealthy habits.

When you get to that point when you’re losing weight and you feel like “Why am I doing this if there are no results?” and then you give up, that’s the point when you have to keep going. That is the moment when you have to decide that you’re not gonna give up, you’re gonna keep moving forward and you’re gonna start being diligently. Shortly after that time you’re gonna start noticing results.

Exercising to lose weight sucks because you can gain weight in a week and you have no idea where it comes from. But to lose one kg in a week you have to try, you have to put yourself in a completely different lifestyle than you were before. So it takes time and it takes practice, but just keep going, don’t stop. If you had a bad week that doesn’t mean you’ve lost all momentum.

How To Get Over The Fitness Hump

So I want to give you a couple of tips to keep going, and these tips might really help you get over that fitness hump.

1. Start A Blog

This is one of the biggest motivators because you know there are people out there reading, who are interested in your topics and you don’t want to disappoint them. There will be people who support you in your weight loss journey, and seeing a heartening comment from a reader will definitely make you kick it up a notch.

2. Work Out Harder

You can get over your fitness hump by adding more exercises to your daily routine. Unfortunately, as you become more physically fit, your body becomes accustomed to the same old gym routine. You can’t see results anymore because your body needs a more challenging workout. So consider adding an extra set to your workout, an extra km to your run, 2-3 reps to your sets or extending your warm-up routine and cool down routine with a couple of minutes. You might be surprised by the results.

3. Cut A Few Calories

You can cut some calories from your daily intake by avoiding some unnecessary foods like:

  • Bread – you’ll cut 200-300 calories per day just by avoiding foods like sandwiches or any other bread based foods.
  • Oils – you’ll cut 100-200 calories per day if you cook your meals in the oven.
  • Pork – you’ll cut about 100 calories every time you eat chicken breast instead of pork.

This can help you get over that fitness hump and even lose a couple kg per month.

4. Weigh Yourself Daily

Here’s what Jillian Michaels said in one of her articles: “I recommend that people weigh themselves once a week, at the same time every week. Weighing yourself every day can have a negative impact on you.”

Maybe she’s right, but what I’ve learned on my own skin is that one day you lose weight, the next day you gain it back and so on. At the end of the week you may have the same weight as you had a week before. And this is the point where you will give up because your diet and exercise routine don’t give results.

If you weigh yourself daily, first thing in the morning, you can see every small fluctuation of your weight. Maybe yesterday you gained some weight, but today you lost a bit and you can actually see it on the scale and more important, you can see that it is possible to lose weight. Days like these when you can see on the scale that you get results are a great motivation to keep going towards your goal and to get over that fitness hump.

Also, if you weigh yourself daily you can see what mistakes you’ve made yesterday when you gained some weight, so that you can avoid them in the future.

5. Try New Things

As the days pass, your body accommodates to those old exercises and it becomes more efficient at performing the same workout. Try a completely new type of exercise to keep challenging your muscles, try kangoo jumps, crossfit or even some weird fitness workouts. If you don’t do it already, you should think about lifting weights to burn more calories all day long, even while your body is at rest.

In the end, all you need to get over that fitness hump is support from your family and friends. What could motivate you more than this: “WOW, you’ve lost weight? I like the new you!” So start building your own support team by sharing this info with your friends. Stay fit!
